It goes without saying that the spring of 2025 was very dry, we had no rain from the 22nd April until 23rd May this year (31 days). This is the longest continuous dry spell we have had since our record begin in 1985. The previous record was 19 days and dry spells over 2 weeks are few and far between.
We had 10 days with rain in March, giving only 47mm of rain compared with an average of 139mm but much less that the 206mm of last year and the 276mm the year before. Only 1996 was drier with 46mm.
We had 6 days with rain in April, giving only 39mm of rain compared with an average of 85mm but again much less than the 203mm of last year. We have had 5 drier Aprils, with 2021 giving only 9mm.
We had 9 days with rain in May, giving 98mm of rain, slightly over the average of 90mm.
The total for this spring (March, April and May) was 184mm only 59% of the average of 312mm and considerably drier than the 535mm of last year. Only 2020 was dryer with 160mm. Also when looking at the total for March and April, we had a total of 86mm, only 40 Percent of the average of 217mm, and much less than the 410mm of last year.
June is trying to make up for it, so far we have had 161mm compared to an average of 96mm.
So far for the first 6 months of the year we have had only 581mm, compared with an average of 769mm (or 832mm average of the last 10 years), and much less than last year’s first 6 months at 1145mm.
