SENS Events

Regular SENS Meetings All welcome to attend SENS meetings - for discussion on current local/national/global issues and events and planning of local projects and campaigns.

The next meetings of SENS will be Tuesday 17th April 2012, 7.30pm at Staveley Village Institute.
Diane Hubbard of Green Footsteps will present the findings of her research into air flows in local houses with open chimneys. Come along to hear how differant houses have performed and what you can do to reduce draughts and improve your home.

The venue for monthly SENS meetings is most often the Insitute room at the village hall but please check posters/email notice for confirmation.

Big Onion Events

Get Growing with the Big Onion in 2012 The Big Onion local exchange will run twice a month on the 1st and 3rd Sunday from 2-4pm at the Pavilion, unless otherwise advertised.

Easter Pancake Event Sunday 8th April at the Pavilion. Fun for all the family including freshly cooked pancakes, bicycle powered smoothies, egg painting competition and live music.

Seedy Sunday Sunday 6th May at the Pavilion 2-4pm. Bring your seeds and seedlings to swap. Local pea sticks and bean poles for sale

Seedy Sunday Sunday 20th May at the Pavilion 2-4pm. Bring your seeds and seedlings to swap

Wormeries Sunday 3rd June at the Pavilion 2-4pm. There will be a demonstration of how to set up a wormery with Anne Haywood and Nicola

Elderflower champagne making Sunday 17th June at the Pavilion 2-4pm. Learn how to make your own elderflower champagne

Slugs and other garden pests Sunday 1st July at the Pavilion 2-4pm. There will be talk from Mark Kidd from Sunny Orchard Farm on how to control slugs and other garden pests using organic methods.

Staveley Carnival Saturday 14th July on the recreation ground. Visit the Big Onion stall! (NB The Big Onion will not run on Sunday 15th due to the carnival).

Big Bee Event Sunday 19th August at the Pavilion 2-4pm. Big Bee event with Julia Piggot from Beeed in Brigsteer. Displays, info and demonstrations.

Damson Sunday 2nd September at the Pavilion 2-4pm. In addition to the usual Big Onion Exchange there will also be a visit to a local damson orchard with Karen Bentley Brown.

Harvest Lunch Sunday 23rd September at the Pavilion 2-4pm.

Apple Day Saturday 29th September outside Wilfs. (NB The Big Onion will not run on Sunday 30th)

Cider Making or Wild Food Sunday 7th October at the Pavilion 2-4pm. tbc.

Pumpkin Day Sunday 28th October at the Pavilion 2-4pm.

Past Events

Planning meeting for increasing veg and fruit growing in Staveley Come along to the Pavilion in Staveley on Sunday 4th March 2012 from 2-4pm to help plan the planting scheme for the public planting sites around the village, including the Forest Garden on the Recreation Ground and beds in the Mill Yard. All welcome.

'Get Growing' Talks Come along to the Pavilion on Sunday 19th Feb for a talk from 3 local speakers on what types and varieties of vegetables and fruit they find grow well in Staveley, with our marginal land and rainy climate.
We hope this will provide a useful source of information and inspiration to help increase local food growing. All welcome - please come along and share your experiences.

Burning Wood Well Workshop All welcome. Tuesday 21st February, 7.30pm at the Institute Room in Staveley Village Hall. A workshop presented by local charity Cumbria Woodlands looking at processing and storing firewood, burning wood well and the Renewable Heat Incentive. Hosted by SENS (this workshop will take place instead of a general meeting but there wll be time for notices at the end). Download a poster here
