Fir Tree Corner, opposite Staveley’s War Memorial, is a quiet and pretty spot where people can pause, sit on the benches and take a moment to reflect. With its sundial circle, flower pots and carefully tended planting, it has been lovingly looked after by dedicated volunteers for many years.
Recently, the volunteers approached Sustainable Staveley (SENS) to ask if the wider community could lend a hand with some much-needed weeding and tidying.
What happened next has been a wonderful example of community spirit in action.
Staveley Brownies and Guides were among the first to answer the call, spending just over an hour weeding and clearing the area around the church. Their efforts made a huge difference and, hopefully, encouraged others to get involved too.
Following the Brownies and Guides, residents began giving up their own time to tackle the weeds and clear between the flagstones. One local volunteer even offered to go a step further, asking whether they could bring along some new plants and flowers, as well as a small water butt for the area.
The response has been a real reminder of how quickly a small act of community spirit can inspire others.
Margaret, one of the dedicated volunteers who helps care for Fir Tree Corner, along with St James’ Church, has been incredibly touched by the kindness and support coming forward from people who want to help keep this special little corner of Staveley looking beautiful for everyone to enjoy.

There is still more to do, and the community is being invited to continue the great work.
If you have a little spare time, a pair of gardening gloves and a bag for weeds, why not pop along to Fir Tree Corner and spend a few minutes helping to tidy the area? There’s no organised session, simply lend a hand whenever you have the time.
We would also particularly love to hear from anyone who enjoys hedge trimming and would be willing to help give the area some attention.
