On Friday 19th June, Staveley Primary School, Sustainable Staveley and FOSS (Friends of Staveley School) joined forces to host an inspiring, fun-filled event to conclude the pupils’ activities and celebrations for Great Big Green Week.
The Village Hall was buzzing with families, friends and community members who came together to celebrate sustainability, creativity and the achievements of the children throughout the week.
Visitors enjoyed a variety of stalls hosted by local groups and volunteers. Sustainable Staveley ran a popular seedling and plant stall, while FOSS organised a pre-loved school uniform sale alongside cakes, bakes and refreshments. The delicious homemade cakes and bread were generously donated by parents and local business Wilf’s Café. Refreshments included elderflower cordial made using elderflowers gathered from around Staveley village, alongside refreshing mint and cucumber water featuring mint grown in a pupil’s garden. Fiery ginger shots proved a big hit with visitors, while freshly baked sourdough bread sold out within the first five minutes.
All proceeds from the event will support the school’s ongoing fundraising efforts.
The highlight of the afternoon was a vibrant sustainability fashion show, showcasing the children’s learning and creativity throughout Great Big Green Week.
Reception children opened the show by individually taking centre stage to proudly model their nature crowns and accessories created during the week. They then gathered together to share their experiences of building “Bugingham Palace”, their impressive insect habitat project.
Years 1 and 2 brought energy and excitement to the catwalk as parents clapped along and cheered them on. The children twirled and danced while sharing fascinating discoveries from their River Kent exploration with Cumbria Wildlife Trust’s Danni Metcalfe. They spoke enthusiastically about finding a baby trout, crayfish and frogs, as well as their hopes for the success of their new no-dig growing patches.
Years 3 and 4 showcased imaginative outfits created from donated fabrics and pre-loved clothing that had been transformed into wearable fashion. Strutting down the catwalk to the sounds of Uptown Funk, the children confidently showed off their creations while proud parents cheered and applauded. Afterwards, they shared their learning about the insects and mini-beasts living around the school grounds, with woodlice proving to be a particularly popular discovery.
Years 5 and 6 rounded off the show in style with plenty of confidence, creativity and flair. Their catwalk performance featured impressive moves, striking poses and beautifully designed garments.
To conclude, Year 5 & 6 pupils delivered powerful messages about recycling and sustainability, sharing their own catchy slogans to encourage others to reduce waste and recycle more.
The event ended with enthusiastic applause and heartfelt thanks to the staff of Staveley Primary School for organising such an engaging and inspiring celebration. It was a wonderful way to conclude Great Big Green Week, bringing together the school and wider community to celebrate environmental action, creativity and the positive difference that everyone can make.
