Residents of Staveley have an exciting opportunity to help shape the future of Staveley woodlands.

SENS has secured 500 free native woodland trees through the Westmorland and Furness Council’s One Tree per Resident project.

SENS has secured 500 free native woodland trees through the Westmorland and Furness Council’s One Tree per Resident project.

This ambitious initiative aims to help communities plant one tree, or one metre of hedgerow equivalent, for every resident across Westmorland and Furness, ultimately planting a quarter of a million trees over five years in response to the climate and biodiversity crises.

According to the council’s progress update, around 41,544 trees have already been planted, representing approximately 17 % of the total needed to reach the target of one tree per resident.

Tree planting delivers wide-ranging benefits, including supporting wildlife, enhancing biodiversity, improving air and water quality, capturing carbon and helping with natural flood management. Encouraging local involvement is central to the initiative, with opportunities for residents, schools, community groups and parish councils to take part and contribute to the shared goal.

Danni Metcalfe, Staveley Woodlands Officer, will be running the upcoming tree planting events to plant a range of native species in the local Staveley Woodlands. Species include: hornbeam, holly, yew, birch, rowan.
